In addition to our local therapy office, we also provide virtual therapy to clients across Ontario, including Kitchener, Toronto, Ottawa, and London. In this article, we will talk more about who we are as therapists, our office location, what to expect, and what our clients love about coming to see us for therapy.
Why Attunement Matters In Therapy
What is attunement and why do we feel it is important enough to make it part of our name and central focus? Attunement is the process of being “in tune” with ourselves and others. When we are seeing the relationship between therapist and client, being in tune as a therapist means ensuring clients feel seen and heard, receiving compassion and empathy for their lived experiences, and providing a safe container to explore their own inner landscape. Attunement in therapy is the act of being emotionally adept, noticing the client’s verbal and non-verbal cues, and responding to the client’s needs in a supportive manner.
As you can imagine, many now-adults did not receive this level of attunement with a parent or caregiver growing up. It is often what brings clients to therapy, though not always. Sometimes we come to therapy to manage or fix problems in their current life situation. In both of these cases, we often can track challenges back to their past, in order to understand and heal their story.
Often, relationship breakdowns also are related to misattunements between partners, parents or family members that have resulted in ruptures. These ruptures can be repaired if we are able to build emotional attunement towards the people within your circle. Our therapists support clients to become aware of themselves, how they interact with others and how they can support their own needs to be compassionately witnessed. Our therapists help clients feel more at ease with themselves and their loved ones. Attunement is the most important part of the therapeutic process. Clients must feel at ease in the therapy space in order to work through the hard, stress-inducing challenges impacting their daily lives. Attunement allows clients to feel seen, heard and valued while healing their hurts.
Our Therapy Team at the Kincardine Therapy Office
Our psychotherapy services have been growing. Since Attuned Therapy + Wellness began, the team has grown to include three therapists providing psychotherapy. From left to right is Nicole Walker, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), Tori Hamilton, Owner and Registered Nurse Psychotherapist, IBCLC, PMH-C, and Courtney Wehrmann, Registered Nurse Psychotherapist.
Nicole Walker, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying)
Nicole Walker supports individuals of all ages—from children and youth to adults—in finding balance and meaning in their lives. She is passionate about guiding individuals and families on their healing journeys, with her client-centered approach being adaptable to meet the unique needs of each person she works with. Nicole’s approach is grounded in compassion and empathy, allowing her to build trust and respect with those she serves. She has a particular passion for working with children and youth. She uses art therapy to provide a safe and creative environment for emotional expression. Nicole also recognizes the importance of family dynamics in the well-being of children and youth. She strives to foster resilience and confidence in young individuals.
Tori Hamilton, Registered Nurse Psychotherapist, IBCLC, PMH-C
Tori Hamilton specializes in parenting and relationships. She works with children, youth, adults and couples to support families to heal and thrive. Her work often involves building self-awareness, reconnecting with our life’s purpose, nervous system regulation, and processing past trauma. Her clients often tell her that they feel safe and are surprised how quickly change happens once they become aware of patterns showing up in their lives. For child & youth sessions, she stays client-led and follows their lead. She brings play and art into session while introducing emotional awareness and talk therapy approaches. She is a mom of four children and has a background in attachment-led parenting approaches.
Courtney Wehrmann, Registered Nurse Psychotherapist
Courtney Wehrmann supports those who have experienced perinatal trauma. Perinatal trauma, more commonly known as birth trauma, is an event or multiple events that happen during the time period of beginning to start a family up to post-partum. This includes pre-conception, conception, maintaining pregnancy, birth and post birth. 1 in 3 individuals report their birth experience as traumatic. Courtney believes that everyone has the ability to heal from their perinatal trauma. She is also a mom of two and a two time perinatal trauma survivor. She is very passionate about helping individuals feel validated and seen in their own experiences. Her client centered approach will be unique to each individual to help each person feel less isolated and consumed by their trauma. Together with her clients, she can unpack feelings and give space for trauma and grief in order to heal.
Our Kincardine Therapist Office
Our office is located at 1802 Highway 21, Kincardine Ontario. We are on the north side of Kincardine towards Tiverton and Port Elgin. The office is across from KTTPS making it convenient for students and teachers needing additional counselling support. We believe that accessing counselling services is something to be proud of, requiring significant courage to try new things and to embrace positive change. We also know that starting with a new therapist can bring both excitement and uncertainty. Our team of registered mental health professionals are kind, caring individuals who prioritize the well-being of their clients throughout the therapy process.
What To Expect When Attending Your First Therapy Session
When it comes to therapy, there are varying experiences and beliefs. Some would never want to attend therapy due to their beliefs, and we understand. There are many different ways that people can care for themselves and work towards self-growth, healing and building awareness. We respect all choices surrounding attending therapy, and never want our clients to feel coerced or forced by anyone to come see us. Informed consent is an important part of coming to therapy, and frequent check-ins with your therapist are important to make sure that you are comfortable coming to your therapy sessions.
Some others have had experiences with therapy before coming, which impacts their perceptions of what therapy may be like depending on whether those previous therapy sessions felt good or not-so-good. We always want to hear about your prior experiences as it helps us to create a plan of care that takes into consideration what has worked for you in the past and what you are hoping for in therapy now.
We also have clients coming to therapy for the very first time, all at different ages. We always want our clients to feel safe and at ease, and sometimes this takes additional time. We never want to push our clients to share information they are not ready to share, and are always focused on the client’s goals for therapy. Initial therapy meet and greets or first full sessions are all about the therapist getting to know more about you and what has brought you to therapy.
After you book your first session online, our Kincardine therapist office will send you an intake form and waivers to complete before your first session. You will also receive a confirmation email with your appointment time, our Kincardine office location, and our virtual therapy link in case you ever need it. When booking your therapy session online, you are asked to place a credit card on file. It helps to reduce time spent paying after appointments, and it also ensures that we are able to process payment for virtual or missed appointments. We do have a 24 hour cancellation policy to ensure that clients are accountable for their appointment time, and to allow time for us to fill that spot.
Coming to your first therapy session, you will be welcomed into our bright, sunny reception area with comfortable seating and ambient music. We ask that you remove your shoes or use the provided shoe coverings in winter months to maintain our cozy office environment. Appointments are 60 minutes in length, with meet-and-greets being 30 minutes. This time includes time to process payment and reschedule. Our two offices both have ample seating for individuals, couples and families to attend together. We also have a closet full of activities, games and craft supplies when working with kids or teens. If there is ever a question surrounding what therapy is like here, please feel free to email us at admin@attunedtherapy.ca. We are always available for questions or comments.
Why Clients Love Coming To Therapy At Our Kincardine Therapist Office
We are so grateful for our connections with our community here in Kincardine. We have a wonderful relationship with the health professionals in the area, and have received many referrals through these connections. We also are often referred by our past and present clients. Our focus in therapy is on the client’s well-being, ensuring that they are having a positive experience while working through difficult life experiences. Here are just a few reasons why our clients keep returning to our office for compassionate psychotherapy:
- We are people-centered. We understand that the relationship in the therapy room is the most important piece to the puzzle when working towards goals or when processing past traumatic events. We don’t want our clients to ever feel like just a number. We prioritize our client in all aspects of care provided.
- We know how important the space we spend time in is. Our environment matters. We have chosen to focus on making our space as calming and enjoyable as possible, with dim lights and soft furniture. Our clients often remark on how nice it is to spent time in our office, including our younger kids and teens. We believe that the attention we have spent on the space we provide therapy in is a direct reflection on how much we think our clients matter. Our clients deserve to feel safe, comfortable, and relaxed during therapy.
- We aren’t only focused on fixing and tools. Though clients may come into therapy wanting strategies and perhaps even professional guidance, we also encourage our clients to begin to recognize their own capacities to make decisions and feel better. While we definitely do provide behavioural techniques and tools to cope, we also know this isn’t all there is to healing. If our clients are wanting to build self-awareness, understanding their patterns and coping mechanisms in a compassionate way, we can continue supporting them on this path towards self-healing.
- Clients are the experts, and we are here to support. Clients often leave our office feeling more understood than ever. Our team is rooted in ethics and maintaining a safe space for all. We understand the power that therapists can have, and our focus is on maintaining a more collaborative approach with our clients.
