A Grounded and Relational Approach to Therapy
Stephen offers a calm, collaborative therapeutic space where clients can feel understood while working through challenges such as anxiety, relationship stress, emotional regulation difficulties, life transitions, and the impact of past experiences.
His approach to psychotherapy is trauma-informed, relational, and attachment-focused, with an emphasis on understanding the patterns that shape thoughts, emotions, and relationships over time.
He integrates a range of evidence-informed approaches, including:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
- Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT)
- Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS)
- Trauma-informed and parts-informed perspectives
Rather than relying on a single model, Stephen adapts his approach to each client, balancing insight with practical strategies that support meaningful change.
Extensive Experience Across Complex Mental Health Settings
Stephen brings a deep clinical background across community mental health, hospital, crisis, and intensive treatment environments. Throughout his career, he has supported individuals and families navigating complex trauma, anxiety disorders, attachment disruptions, emotional dysregulation, and serious mental health concerns.
He is experienced in comprehensive assessment, treatment planning, and interdisciplinary collaboration, including working alongside psychiatric and medical teams in high-acuity settings.
This breadth of experience informs a steady, thoughtful approach that prioritizes safety, clarity, and long-term change.
Supporting Individuals, Couples, and Families in Grey Bruce
Stephen works with individual adults, youth, couples, and families seeking support for a wide range of concerns, including:
- Anxiety and chronic stress
- Relationship and communication challenges
- Family conflict and parenting stress
- Life transitions and identity shifts
- Emotional regulation difficulties
- The impact of trauma and attachment patterns
Stephen works with clients seeking support during times when things feel emotionally heavy, confusing, or difficult to navigate alone. Many of the people he works with are not necessarily in crisis, but feel stuck in patterns that are affecting their relationships, sense of self, or overall well-being.
For individuals, this often includes support with anxiety, self-doubt, and persistent overthinking that can make it difficult to feel grounded or present in daily life. Others come to therapy during periods of transition—such as career changes, parenting stress, separation, or shifts in identity—when familiar ways of coping no longer feel effective.
Stephen also supports clients who are trying to make sense of how past experiences continue to show up in present-day relationships. This may look like difficulty trusting others, emotional reactivity that feels hard to control, or a tendency to withdraw or shut down when things feel overwhelming.
In his work with couples and families, Stephen focuses on helping people move out of reactive cycles and into more open, stable communication. This often involves slowing things down enough to understand what is happening underneath conflict—such as unmet needs, misattunement, or long-standing relational patterns—so that change can happen in a more sustainable way.
Across all of his work, Stephen’s focus is on creating a steady therapeutic space where clients can begin to understand themselves more clearly, regulate emotions more effectively, and build relationships that feel more connected and less strained over time. His style is structured yet flexible, supporting clients in making sense of their experiences while building practical tools for day-to-day life.
