Neuroaffirming Therapy for Adults

Have you recently been diagnosed with ADHD, autism or AuDHD in adulthood? Or perhaps you have a sneaky suspicion that you may be neurodivergent, and know you want someone who understands what it's like to live with different ways of seeing the world. Our office provides a neuroaffirming, trauma-informed approach for individuals experiencing challenges associated with how their brains function, without shaming. We understand that executive functioning skills are important, and your identity is too. We don't aim to change who you are - but rather, help you build self-worth while building resources that can help you manage your day-to-day life.

What Life Can Be Like with ADHD/Autism

ADHD isn't a disease or disorder. It is a neurodevelopmental condition that is caused by a neurochemical imbalance. Serotonin and dopamine levels are not enough, making it hard to stay focused, attentive, organized, and present.

Many adults with ADHD have gone diagnosed. Symptoms of ADHD in women are often more easily masked by over-functioning in their strongest executive functioning skills. This results in our clients appearing to have it all together on the outside, but on the inside they feel like they are a house of cards, waiting for one small gust of wind to topple down everything they have worked so hard to build.

Common Challenges That Show Up For Neurodivergent Individuals

Being autistic and/or ADHD means that your system works differently, and it's important that you know you are welcome in our spaces exactly as you are. Exhaustion and burnout can easily occur, making it increasingly harder to function in a neurotypical world. Our therapy approach offers a relational experience where being yourself is part of healing, unmasking versions of yourself that you thought weren't acceptable to others. We are welcoming all parts of you, and through this process can build mastery in skills that may not come naturally to you but bring positive change into your life. Common challenges that we can approach in neuroaffirming therapy includes:

Inattention

Learning how to build attention and focus into your daily life, strengthening listening skills and attuning to your needs while also being in relationships with others.

Building capacities to pause before reacting, emotional regulation skills and strengthening awareness of how your actions impact others.

Allowing space for fidgeting and learning to build resources to support your need for movement. Recognizing strengths that come from busy minds.

Using the strengths in executive functioning that you do have, and learning ways to build new ways to see yourself, lessening shame attached to challenges with disorganization and procrastination.
