Indigenous Therapy Near Saugeen First Nation
Attuned Therapy + Wellness acknowledges that our clinic operates on the traditional territory of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation, the shared territory of the Chippewas of Saugeen First Nation and the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation.
As settlers providing mental health services in this community, we recognize that Indigenous Peoples have experienced historical and ongoing harms through colonial policies and systems, including residential schools, the Sixties Scoop, forced displacement, systemic discrimination, and inequitable access to healthcare and mental health services. We understand that these experiences continue to affect individuals, families, and communities today.
We recognize that many Indigenous individuals, families, and communities continue to experience the impacts of historical and ongoing trauma, including intergenerational trauma, loss, grief, systemic barriers, and ongoing inequities. We also recognize the incredible strength, resilience, wisdom, and healing that exists within Indigenous families and communities.
We are committed to providing trauma-informed, culturally aware therapy for Indigenous youth, adults, parents, and families throughout Kincardine, Saugeen Shores, Bruce County, and surrounding communities, including those living in or near Saugeen First Nation.
Our goal is to create a respectful, welcoming space where your experiences, identity, culture, values, and strengths are honoured. We strive to provide care that is collaborative, culturally responsive, and grounded in humility. We understand that therapy is only one pathway to healing and that cultural teachings, Elders, ceremony, community connections, language, spirituality, and land-based practices may also play important roles in wellness.
We do not view reconciliation as a statement, but as an ongoing responsibility to listen, learn, reflect, and provide care that is respectful, safe, and accountable. We are committed to continuing our education and growing our understanding so that Indigenous clients and families feel welcomed, heard, and supported when accessing services with our team.
A Trauma-Informed Approach to Indigenous Mental Health
Trauma can affect individuals, families, and entire communities across generations. Many Indigenous people have experienced personal trauma, collective trauma, or both.
Trauma-informed therapy recognizes that:
- Your reactions may be understandable responses to difficult experiences.
- Safety, trust, choice, collaboration, and empowerment are essential to healing.
- Healing looks different for everyone.
- Cultural identity, community, family, land, spirituality, and traditional knowledge can be important sources of strength and resilience.
- Therapy should work alongside your values and beliefs rather than asking you to set them aside.
We understand that seeking support can feel vulnerable, particularly if previous experiences with healthcare, education, child welfare, or other systems have felt harmful, dismissive, or unsafe.
Indigenous Mental Health and Intergenerational Trauma
Intergenerational trauma refers to the ways trauma can affect future generations through family systems, relationships, parenting patterns, emotional responses, and community experiences.
You may notice impacts such as:
- Difficulty trusting others
- Feeling disconnected from yourself or others
- Challenges with emotional regulation
- Anxiety or hypervigilance
- Relationship difficulties
- Feelings of shame or self-criticism
- Grief connected to family or cultural loss
Therapy can provide a supportive space to better understand these experiences and develop new pathways toward healing and connection.
