What Actually Happens in a Virtual Therapy Session? A Step-By-Step Guide for First-Timers

by Tori Hamilton, RN Psychotherapist, IBCLC, PMH-C | May 31, 2026 | Therapy in Ontario (In-Person & Virtual Care)

If you’ve been searching for an online psychotherapist Ontario or exploring virtual mental health support Ontario, you may be considering therapy for the first time—or transitioning from in-person care to online support.

Virtual therapy has become one of the most accessible ways to receive mental health care, especially for people balancing work, parenting, and busy schedules. Booking your first virtual therapy session can be a little scary - we want to help you feel more at ease in knowing what to expect and how to navigate online therapy with ease.

At Attuned Therapy + Wellness, we provide secure, evidence-informed virtual therapy Ontario-wide designed to help you feel grounded, supported, and understood from the very first session.

Step 1: Booking with a Online Psychotherapist in Ontario

Your first step is reaching out and booking an appointment with a qualified therapist.

At Attuned Therapy + Wellness, our clinicians are regulated professionals in Ontario, including:

All of our therapists are part of a regulatory body that is approved to perform the controlled act of psychotherapy by the Regulated Health Professionals Act. Our priority in building our therapy team is depth of understanding and lived experience, ability to hold compassion for our clients, and clinical knowledge and expertise. It is important that therapists have both experience and knowledge to ensure that they can sit with clients in the most challenging aspects of their life journey.

Choosing a qualified therapist ensures your care is always ethical, accountable, and grounded in regulated professional standards. Some clients also choose to start with a brief consultation to ensure the right therapeutic fit. Our team provides free 15-minute consults to clients anywhere in Ontario to see if we are a fit for your life challenges and goals.

Another part of seeking mental health counselling in Ontario is navigating the complex world of insurance coverage. If you have insurance and are wondering if coverage is available, please contact your insurance plan directly to ask about our team's specific designations and also check out our frequently asked questions page.

Once your appointment is booked, you’ll receive a secure video link to join your session by email. You may also receive an intake form to complete and consent forms to review before your initial therapy session.

We use privacy-compliant platforms that meet health-care confidentiality standards in Ontario. Professional guidance on telehealth emphasizes secure communication, informed consent, and client privacy, for example as outlined by the American Psychological Association telepsychology guidelines.

In most cases, you simply click the link at your appointment time—no downloads or technical setup required. Therapists may choose different types of video hosting platforms, but overall the focus is on maintaining secure, stable connection to connect with your therapist virtually. Our team focuses on simplicity by using Jane for both our online booking and all video sessions. Whether you are booking yourself or your family in, you will receive the information you need for your first appointment by email. If you need additional help, you can contact us by email at any time.

Step 3: Preparing for Your Session

There is no “perfect” way to prepare for therapy. Therapists want their clients to feel safe, comfortable and at ease joining their therapy session online. One of the many benefits of virtual therapy is that clients can stay home in comfortable attire without the need to be dressed up with make up or feeling pressured to appear a certain way (not that our in-person clients need to worry about this either!) It is, however, important that you have a few things set up beforehand so that your first virtual therapy appointment goes smoothly:

  • Choose a quiet, private space that you won't be overheard or seen during
  • Use headphones if possible to enhance audio and support confidentiality
  • Ensure your device is charged with a charging cable available, just in case
  • Reduce interruptions where you can to maximize the time you are spending in session
  • A stable internet connection, preferably with the option of hardwiring if the connection is unstable causing a lag

That said, real life is always welcome in therapy. Pets, babies & children, or interruptions are common in virtual sessions and are met with flexibility and understanding. Many of our clients have full, busy lives, and we support clients through any challenging situations that show up in session. Sometimes this can end up being an important part of the therapeutic work that we do - and a benefit of having virtual therapy while at home.

Step 4: Starting the Session

The first few minutes of a virtual therapy session are focused on helping you settle in and orient yourself to this special time devoted to your mental health and well-being. Many of us don't spend much time on ourselves, and therapy can be one of the few hours in our week where we spend time listening to our inner voice and reflecting on our life experiences.

Your therapist will typically:

  • Greet you and check in about how you’re feeling
  • Review confidentiality and informed consent (especially in your first session)
  • Explore what brought you to therapy or what your priority is in today's session
  • Begin understanding your goals and current concerns

If it’s your first session, you may also explore your history, relationships, stressors, and what support you are hoping for. It is important that we gradually build a trusting therapeutic relationship over time, knowing that clients aren't expected to provide every detail of their life or traumatic experiences right in the first session. Therapy is meant to feel safe, so please only share what you feel comfortable sharing at a pace that feels good for you.

Step 5: What Therapy Actually Looks Like

Once the conversation begins, most people are surprised by how natural it feels. Even first-timers find that once a therapeutic relationship is built between therapist and client, the hour goes by very fast. It is not necessary to have specific focuses coming in to therapy, though that is welcomed if you are wanting to stay on track to reach a goal in therapy. Many clients come to therapy thinking they have nothing to talk about, and then end up exploring aspects of their lives they never realized were upsetting them. Therapists are trained to offer space for clients to reflect and explore their inner world, so as long as we can sit with curiosity, sessions tend to flow naturally.

Depending on your needs, therapy may include:

  • Understanding emotional patterns and triggers
  • Exploring anxiety, stress, trauma, or burnout
  • Strengthening communication and relationships
  • Developing coping strategies and grounding tools
  • Supporting parenting stress or life transitions

At Attuned Therapy + Wellness, we frequently support clients navigating anxiety, emotional overwhelm, relationship strain, and parenting challenges.

Virtual therapy often feels just as connected and effective as in-person care once the initial adjustment period passes. If you are not feeling well-connected to your virtual therapist in Ontario, it may be worth seeing if there is a better fit for you. Sometimes it takes a few different attempts to find the right therapist match, and over time we sometimes need to see different therapists depending on what is happening in our life at the time. Beginning with a new therapist can be hard, with worries of needing to retell all of your clinical background and develop that attuned therapeutic relationship. The positive aspect of beginning therapy with another therapist is you may find additional insights are gained, developing a more broad awareness of the dynamics showing up in your life.

Step 6: Wrapping Up the Session

As your session comes to a close, your therapist may:

  • Summarize key reflections or themes
  • Check in on how you’re feeling
  • Offer coping tools or next steps if helpful
  • Schedule your next session if appropriate

It is important that you leave your session feeling ready to continue regular life. Virtual therapists are skilled at supporting clients to reconnect with the present, often using grounding tools and skills-based psychoeducation to offer clients regulation strategies to use outside of therapy sessions. Therapy is a gradual process that unfolds over time as the therapeutic relationship builds. There is no expectation to "get it right" in therapy, with therapists focused on supporting clients exactly where they are each session.

Step 7: After Your Session

After a virtual therapy session, people often notice:

  • A sense of relief or emotional release
  • Fatigue from processing deeper emotions
  • Increased awareness of patterns or relationships
  • Continued reflection throughout the day

It's very important that clients are encouraged to rest after their session when possible, though we do know that part of the benefit of working with an online psychotherapist Ontario is to be able to add it into daily life - for example during your lunch break or between other scheduled events. Even just reminding yourself that you will take some time later in the evening to rest and reflect can help parts of you feeling unsettled after a therapy session can be helpful. Some clients find it helpful to journal, rest, or take a walk afterward to integrate the experience.

Is Virtual Therapy Effective?

Yes. Research consistently shows that virtual therapy can be as effective as in-person therapy for many concerns, including anxiety, depression, stress, and relational challenges.

The Canadian Psychological Association supports telepsychology when clinicians follow appropriate ethical, clinical, and privacy standards.

Virtual therapy is particularly helpful for:
